Making A Monster
Everything
You Always Wanted To Know About Making A Monster
(But Were Afraid To Ask) |
I’m sure that you, like most people, at some point in
their life thought about creating your very own monster, but
thought it was just too hard to make or would cost too much money.
Truth of the matter is, it is not as hard as you might
think. Actually, for
the mere cost of a few bucks, some old clothes, some bubble wrap
and little bit of your time, you too can make the monster of your
dreams.
Most
folk will just get some old clothes or an old Halloween costume
and stuff it with rags or paper or whatever and have this frumpy
looking thing that you can’t do anything with.
It might be okay if you just put it together and leave in
one spot and don’t touch it, but the second you move it, the
whole thing crumbles and falls apart.
One solution we at uncledeathy.com have found is to make a
base for your dummy using PVC pipe.
This was an idea that was incorporated from other Halloween
websites, not unlike uncledeathy.com. We took their basic ideas and modified them to suit our own
needs.
The first thing you need to do is to
decide what kind of creature/dummy/monster you would like to make
and figure out what position you want your creature/dummy/monster
to be in. This will
give you a rough idea of how much pipe and fittings you will need
to buy. Once you have an idea of what you’ll need, head over to go
to your local hardware store or Home Depot and pick up some ¾ or1
inch PVC pipe, some fittings and PVC glue.
Before
you stop home, stop off at an office supply shop and buy some
bubble wrap. This is
an easy and fast way to give your dummy some shape and body
without making it too heavy and cumbersome.
One of the big problems with making a dummy stuffed with
old rags, paper or other material is that it often looks lumpy.
This is not the case necessarily when using bubble wrap.
You will get the uniform look you desire if done properly.

Making
The Monster
What
you need:
1-PVC pipe
2-PVC fittings (couplings, 22 ½, 45 & 90 degree fittings)
3-PVC glue
4-Hack saw or PVC cutter
5-Duct tape
6-Styrofoam head
How
to do it:
Depending on what you are making, start by cutting the PVC pipe
and use your fittings to make a basic shape of your creature.
Assemble all the pieces together before gluing to see if the
shape and position is what you were anticipating.
If so, you can then glue all the fittings into place.
It only takes a couple of seconds for the glue to harden.
Once the framework is done you can now start using the bubble
wrap to fill him out. Get
your tape and line it up along the edge of the bubble wrap and tape it
to the PVC. Wrap around
until you get the girth you desire.
Continue to do this for all the different parts of the body.
Once complete, you can finish off with the costume of your
choice. A good idea for the head is to put a tee fitting between the
shoulders where the neck should be and have a short piece of pipe stick
up from it. You can apply a
Styrofoam head to the pipe. This
can be picked up cheap from a wig shop or any beauty salon. You can be
creative and design and paint the head to your liking or simply put an
appropriate mask on to complete your monster.
