Witch & Cauldron

This prop is a real go getter it makes everybody look at it twice and say "HOW DID YOU DO THAT?" It is not too hard for the first timer. I have seen this type of prop on the internet and many different ways to make it. So I started with the idea of how high should I have the cauldron? I decided to make the cauldron waist high. The body is a pvc frame, it is the same design as Terrible Tom's Halloween.com. I dressed the witch with regular clothes and then covered it with long black material as you would see at a craft store. I also stuffed the frame with bubble wrap which is great and light. For the base for the cauldron I used a 40 gallon trash can it was blue so I covered it with a huge black trash
bag. Before I covered the garbage can I drilled a hole in the center of the trash can. This is where the gear Motor will sit (SEE PIC OF CAULDRON AND GEAR MOTOR) In the pics and mpeg of the witch you see the final result. This year I am going to add a bunch of orange lights under the cauldron to simulate fire and a small fog machine. I think she needs a little updating this year. The other possibility was to cut a big hole in the can paint the inside black and then get one of those faux fire things, put a bunch of sticks around it to make it look like a real fire. So we shall see.

The Cauldron

I found the biggest cauldron I could find it is huge! Compared to the small ones you see at your local target store. If you can't find a really big cauldron then you could get a keg cooler bucket it would work just the same. I took a 6rpm gear motor screwed it to the bottom of the cauldron so just the shaft was showing in the bottom of the cauldron. Then i took a piece of 1/8 by 1 inch aluminum stock and twisted it like you would do for a crank ghost. Then just attach it to the shaft as you would a crank ghost run off a gear motor. Then I bent the aluminum upwards so I could slide a ½ inch pvc pipe over it and blamo! You have your cauldron

ready to go! I took the witch's hands and stapled them to the pvc pipe (I painted the pipe black before I did this). I maneuvered the base of the cauldron to the witch so I could get exactly the distance and smooth stirring I wanted. It's up to you how you do this part. Then I put a hole in the cauldron so I could slip a 25 watt green light bulb in it to add that eerie glow and I also wd40 the pvc pipe from where the pvc covers the shaft. If you don't do this after a while the pipe makes a loud screeching noise not to cool. The mask was something I found on Ebay I know the Fright catalog sells this exact mask if you like this one to use for your witch. For the hands a cheap pair of rubber monster hands and the hat I bought at CVS for a dollar. The funniest thing about this witch is people have had there picture taken next to her and people will say to me who see the picture is "who was dressed up like a witch?" How cool is that!
